So, you finally have your green thumb and now it is time to move. What do you do with your plants? You have worked so hard to get the right plants to grow and now you can’t even bear the thought of them being ruined during your move! Fortunately for you, there are ways that you can move your houseplants without killing them off. Let’s take a look.

1. Start Preparing Early

One of the first things you want to do is start prepping your plants early on before the move. About three weeks in advance, you want to start repotting your plants and placing them into sturdy pots.

By repotting them, you will prevent any type of shock and the plant will not absorb the impact, which will help keep it alive and well.

You should avoid choosing pots that are easily breakable, because, after all, you are trying to protect your plant, not injure it.

2. Get Them Ready

Once the plants have been repotted and they are thriving, now it is time to get out the shears and start pruning them. You should remove any additional leaves or foliage that does not need to be there.

If you can, trim the leaves up a bit to eliminate the opportunity for damage to the plant itself. You will also want to take some time to inspect the plant for any signs of disease or pests and treat accordingly BEFORE you move the plants.

3. Hydrate Your Plants

You do not want to have a watery mess on your hands come move day, so you should hydrate your plants two days before the move. Give the plant enough water, but do not drown it in water either.

4. Start Packing

You should start gathering boxes for your plants and placing them inside. It is generally recommended that you place each plant in its own box to prevent damage.

Before you place the plant inside of the box, line the box with a plastic bag or a trash bag. This will help catch any soil that may dump out of the pot during the move.

You should add some type of cushioning inside of the box as well to prevent too much movement of the plant. Once the plant is in place, seal the box and then place the boxes gently into your moving truck.

Moving plants does not have to be difficult. You should follow the steps above to protect them and ensure that they arrive in one piece.
