1. Keep Your Pet Safe during the Move

One of the scariest things for your pet is the actual move and it is important that you take the time to keep your pet safe and minimize any potential stressors. If your pet is in your home during the move, comfort him or her and keep them in a safe area of the home where there will be low traffic and where furniture and boxes are not being moved.

When possible, you may want to consider placing your pet in a boarding facility until the move is completed and over.

2. Keep Your Routine

Another thing to keep in mind is that you need to remain on your same routine, even when you move. The move itself is a big enough change for your pet and if you start to switch the routine and do things differently, they will not respond well to it.

For example, if your dog is used to eating at 8:00 am and at 6:00 pm, maintain this schedule as not to cause confusion.

3. Try to Recreate Their Old Atmosphere

You should try to recreate your pet’s old atmosphere as much as possible. For example, if your cat has a cat bed, make sure you place it in a spot that is closely similar to the spot in your old home. You should also bring along your cat’s favorite toys. Now is not the time to throw away your pet’s comfort items, so make sure to grab them all and offer them to your pet in your new home.

It may be frustrating to have your cat constantly hiding in the closet or your dog cowering behind your couch while the ceiling fan is on, but you need to be as patient as possible. Your pet’s anxiety will eventually disappear and the more patient you are with them, the more comfortable they will feel and they will warm up to your new home quickly.

5. Show Affection

You should avoid withholding affection because this is the time your pet needs it the most. Spend some time playing with your pet or encouraging him or her to explore the house. Remember, hugs and kisses go a long way.
