4 Things to Look for When Touring a Self-Storage Facility

When you are looking for a storage unit to house your items, you want to make sure that you are choosing a facility that has all of the amenities and features you want. If you do not take time to tour a facility, you may find that you are unhappy with the choice you made. To prevent this from happening, you should look at the following four things while you take a tour of your local self-storage facility.

What Type of Security is in Place?

When you tour the facility, consider what type of security the facility has in place. Are there cameras throughout the facility, is there a gate that requires an access code, or can anyone come and go as they please?

You want to know that your items are safe while being stored, so make sure you are comfortable with the level of security that is being provided at the facility.

How Does the Property Look?

When taking a tour, make sure to look over the property as a whole. Do you notice pests running around, are the unit doors intact, is there trash on the ground? Always look to make sure that there is no damage to the units or buildings as this could be a sign of poor upkeep or it could be a sign that something happened there.

Is There a Property Manager On-Site?

Look to see if there is a property manager on site. You can also ask if the manager lives on site, but it is important that there is one as he or she will be able to oversee the property and respond when there is a problem. While the rental office will not be open 24 hours a day, typically, a property manager can be reached 24 hours a day in the event of an emergency.

What Do the Units Look Like?

Inspect some of the individual units and make sure they look clean and are not torn apart inside. You also want to know that the facility has a variety of unit sizes in case you need to move to a smaller or larger unit.

After you have chosen a facility, before you sign your lease, check the unit you are renting thoroughly. Look for any signs of rodents or pests and ensure that the door opens and closes easily without a struggle. The more you look into while on your tour, the more comfortable you will be when you make a decision on a property.
