When you call a moving company to come help you move, you may be shocked to find that they will not move some common household items that you may have. Moving companies have policies set against certain items for one reason or another.

Before you assume that your moving company is going to pick up and move the items you need them to, consider the following items they will not move.

1. Household Plants

Just as you cannot store household plants in a storage unit, your movers are unlikely to take them along for the move. This is because many times, they cannot control whether the plant tips over or is safe inside of the truck.

In addition, if you are moving to a new state, the state may have a law against bringing plants in that are not native to the state. This is because the plants may contain pests and bringing them into the state will introduce them to the ecosystem there.

2. Hazardous Materials

Your movers will not move hazardous materials for you. The list of what is considered hazardous is lengthy, but you can probably use reason to figure out what is and is not.

For instance, your movers will not move car batteries, propane, gasoline, household chemicals, and the like.

If you do have any items that are considered hazardous, use them up before you move or dispose of them properly and then repurchase them again once you are moved.

3. Pool Chemicals

Pool chemicals cannot be moved with the rest of your items, as they are considered hazardous. Typically, your movers will not move pool equipment either as chlorine may still be in some of them.

4. Outdoor Lawn Equipment

Lawn equipment may not seem like a danger, but many outdoor lawn equipment items require gas and oil to operate. Since these items are against most moving companies’ policies, they will not take the equipment on the truck.

If you are preparing for an upcoming move, make sure that all of your items can be placed on the moving company’s truck. If you are unsure about an item or two, call your local moving company and ask them for guidance.

If you plan to rent a storage facility for your move and after your move, many of the items that your moving company will not take cannot be stored in the storage unit either, so keep this in mind.
